To say Kristin Mcgee is a powerhouse is an understatement. You’ve likely seen her on Instagram, practicing yoga while sandwiched between her three adorable children. You may have seen her on TV or in the movies, too — she’s also an actress. More recently, you’ve probably done yoga or meditated with her on the Peloton app.
Above all, though, Kristin is a kind, caring human being and mother. Here’s her unique take on practicing self-compassion, raising empathetic kids, and the unexpected superpower she cultivated after her sons were born.
How did you come to fall in love with yoga?
I discovered it in the early 90s while in acting school at NYU. I immediately fell in love with it and felt right at home in my body!
Do you have a favorite style? Why?
I love Vinyasa because of the flow and choreography. I was a dancer, so I love the fluidity of it and creating sequences that feel like dancing with my breath.
Who would you consider to be a few of your greatest mentors?
Nevine Michaan from Katonah Yoga and Nikki Costello, who was my very first yoga teacher. Then there’s Tina Fey, my mom, my best friend Lisa Landphair … to name a few.
What is the yoga pose you can’t live without?
Oh, so many! Downward dog is such a staple that I need at least one downward dog a day. I also love any good hip opener.
What have you uncovered about yourself through motherhood?
Motherhood has given me a new superpower I never realized I had! I truly learned how empathetic I am. I feel so much, and because of my boys I am more kind, caring and giving to myself, them, and everyone.
Can you share some tips for yoga instructors who aspire to build a global brand like yours?
Be true to yourself. If you are doing your own work, listening to your voice and sharing it authentically, you’ll keep building a brand. Also, don’t stop! Usually when you feel like you want to give up is when things open up.
How did you come to partner with Peloton?
I reached out to Robin Arzon, who I had worked with on a prior campaign and asked her if Peloton was looking for yoga instructors to audition, and the rest is history. So going back to building a brand, look for opportunities, too: Don’t wait for things to happen to you!
How do you practice self-compassion? In what area of your life do you need it most?
I meditate, I do yoga, I speak positive thoughts to myself. I need it most in my career and parenting — I just need to be kind to myself as I do my best.
How do you keep mindfulness top of mind with your children?
I truly listen to them and make sure I am fully with them. I also practice yoga with them! Children are naturally more mindful and live in the present moment more.
If you had to pick three daily rituals for raising empathetic kids, what would they be?
Connecting them with their bodies and breath, reading to them, and having open conversations with them.
Is there someone you deeply admire right now? Why?
John Foley, Peloton’s founder. He is such an innovator and brings health to so many people as well as keeping an open conversation with his employees and consumers. He is open to what is happening in the world and truly making changes for the better.
What is the top priority for you right now to help nurture and heal the planet?
Education and awareness. When people become aware of their own actions and how their actions affect themselves, hopefully they also realize how we are all connected and how each action impacts everything. It starts with us taking care of the self and then truly realizing how important it is to take care of our planet. Healing starts from within, movement starts from within. That’s how a true movement can happen.
